Helltaker is a freewareindiepuzzle-adventure game with dating sim elements designed by Polish[1] developer Łukasz Piskorz, also known as vanripper. It was released in May 2020 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is described as 'a short game about sharply dressed demon girls.'[2][3][4][5]

The plot follows a man named the Helltaker, who has a dream in which he has a harem of demon girls. Waking up, he decides to journey down into Hell to make his dream come true. He convinces the girls to join him throughout the events of the game, and after succeeding, although it is stated his time with them will be short and painful, he decides that he still enjoys it.
Gameplay[edit]
The player proceeds through a series of puzzle stages with the end goal of reaching a demon girl, answering her question appropriately, and incorporating her into the player's demon harem. Each puzzle stage involves pushing stones and skeleton soldiers around a two-dimensional top-down grid akin to Sokoban while keeping within a set turn limit, while also avoiding spike traps and collecting key items.[6] After reaching the goal, the demon girl for that particular stage will ask a question in which the player must infer the correct answer based on her personality, and an incorrect answer may result in a bad ending such as death, taking the player back to the beginning of the stage.[6][7]

The final boss level (featuring the demon Judgement, the High Prosecutor) includes phased bullet hell-like mechanics with chains across the screen.[2]
Development[edit]
Łukasz Piskorz, known on Twitter as 'vanripper', developed the entirety of the game by himself over an estimated one-year period and was the game's artistic director.[8] According to Piskorz, Helltaker is somewhat reminiscent of the Leisure Suit Larry video game series, as the main characters of both games have characteristics reminiscent of each other.[9]
The game can be played for free,[10] and an art book and the recipe for the pancakes that appear in the game are sold separately.[11]
Although the video game is only officially available in English, Piskorz has supported the translations made by the community, explaining how to make them and making one in Polish himself.[8]

Helltaker gives us the answer to the question that we have all asked ourselves. What if I had a harem full of sexy and naughty demon girls? The tag line for the game is that it is a short game about sharply dressed demon girls! That right there put a smile on my face and made me want to know more about what the heck this game is. Well, what we have here is a puzzle game with just a tad of visual novel elements sprinkled over the top of it.
My Dream Demon Girl
The story of the game is a lot of fun. You decide that you want a harem of demon girls so you open a portal to hell and begin your quest. The premise of Helltaker is just a ton of fun and I like how the game has a very tongue in cheek style to it. You decide that demon girls are the way to go and hell is full of all kinds of demon girls. I like how each girl has her own personality. For example, Modeus is known as The Lustful Demon and Pandemonica is the Tired Demon. Each one has her own personality and you need to pick up on this as it is a very important part of the game.
Red, It Is Kind Of Red!
The visuals of the game are awesome. They are the kind of thing that is hard to describe, but I think the best way to look at the game is that it is a cell-shaded style with a heavy emphasis on red. Red is cool in my book as the game is set in hell after all. It has a very cool visual style to it and I love how the girls have a very naughty look to them without going the XXX route like many other games would have done.
Top Down, Make The Right Choices
The gameplay of Helltaker is a lot of fun. This is a top down puzzle game where each level gives you a limited number of moves. The goal of each level is to get your demon girl, but you need to do things such as move blocks, collect items, and avoid death traps as you do. The game forces you to really think about each move before you start a level as some levels give you just the bare minimum moves to make it.
Once you do make it to a girl, she just does not join your harem like that! You still have to answer a question and this question will be in relation to that particular girl's personality so make sure you answer right or you have to do the whole level again! Each level is very short, but that is part of the charm of the game and while I would like more, the game is free.
I had a great time with Helltaker and I highly recommend that you give this one a try if you enjoy puzzle games. It is the kind of game that is very easy in theory and some of the levels are simple. However, this game is really going to test your puzzle skills, but those demon girls are also going to test just how well you know them if you want them to join your harem! If the game had more content I could have easily scored this a whole point higher!

- The visuals are very slick and have a “hell” quality to them
- Some of the puzzles are very tricky
- I like how different each demon girl is
- I guess this is what hell is like?
Cons:
- I wish the game had more content
- Having to do a whole level because you answered wrong can be annoying
